floored

kelly  |  7 July 2008 - 6:47pm

For the final phase of the kitchen refresh, Rob and I are replacing the floor. And so we are trying to decide on a new floor, which is not going so well. We both suck at making decisions - we overthink every angle until we become so overwhelmed that we give up and do nothing. In fact, Rob's approach to decisions is almost always to delay them. This is based on his belief that if you wait, you may get more information that will help you make a better decision. Which is often true, but just as often it's merely a path to NEVER making a decision. It's the easy way out, though, and so quite often when he suggests we delay I'm like, "Yeah, okay."

But not this time. I am tired of tripping over floor samples. We have been through at least 4 rounds of floor samples ranging from vinyl to hardwood and every conceivable material in between. We have settled on hardwood (and please do not say anything to talk us out of that because we have actually MADE that decision and I'll be damned if we're going to move backward) and now we're considering every possible option in the hardwood realm. We've compared all the samples under every lighting condition at every time of day from every angle. Every angle. "Honey, have you looked at the maple sample when standing on the stool? It looks different from up here!" Of course, that's irrelevant unless we're trying to reach a vase on the top shelf or kill a spider on the ceiling, but still - WE HAVE CONSIDERED IT.

We have now narrowed the choices down to 2(ish), and we've spent the last week tossing pros and cons of each back and forth, the same list over and over again as if perhaps repeating it one more time will make the decision suddenly clear. Yesterday Rob suggested we write the pros & cons down on paper. Considering we both have this list memorized, as evidenced by our daily mantra-like recitation of it, I can only assume he thought that by putting the list into writing we might discover The Answer hidden in the scrawlings somewhere, a secret message only viewable under a black light, perhaps.

Not that I have a better idea. My latest tactic has been to employ the cats in the decision-making, taking it as a "sign" when one of them chooses a particular sample to sit on. Bridget clearly prefers the hickory, but Maylee likes to plop down on the maple, and suddenly I find myself sincerely attempting to determine which of my cats has a better flair for interior design.

You are probably thinking that at this point we should just use The Eeny Meeny Miny Moe Method, but you forget that I am a control freak. I must decide something. Even if that decision is just to, um, delay the decision. Which we're totally not going to do. Unless we are. We haven't decided yet.
