guest room, before and after

During my spring break, the first week of April, I completed another house project. The people who lived here before us had a Winnie the Pooh nursery, which we used as a guest room. The décor was sweet for a baby, but decidedly less so for our adult guests. But then, in the five years we've lived here, we've only had overnight guests twice, so I can't say redecorating it was a priority. And I didn't have any particular ideas for what to do, so I just left it covered in Pooh.
(I have to stop and share a story. When we have parties, we make this room available to our guests with babies so they have a quiet place to nurse or put the baby down to sleep. The first time I showed one of our couple-friends to this room, I said before opening the door, "My apologies for the Pooh on the walls." I was a tad embarrassed, I guess, to have a room decorated like that when we don't have kids. A strange expression crossed the father's face, and when I opened the door and turned on the light, he quickly scanned the room and then said with noticeable relief, "OH! Winnie the Pooh! I get it. I thought you meant....never mind.")

Still, the room needed a transformation. But it wasn't until I started knitting that I finally had inspiration for this room. A studio! Of sorts.

Not a craft room/studio in the typical sense - I don't plan to do any actual knitting here. But I do have lots of knitting stuff that needs storing. And I need a place to go for inspiration, to flip through pattern books and fondle yarn and make big plans. And a guest room that is never used seems like a perfectly good waste of a room to me, so it seemed obvious that it become a guest room and studio combo. Guestudio?

The wall color is a light creamy yellow. I was completely unsure about it before painting, but I LOVE it. In the morning light, the walls glow. It makes me happy just to step into this room, which is exactly what a studio should do for a person.
So now a quick tour. On the left wall is a painted window that was part of the stage set for our high school production of Music Man. Rob and I were in the orchestra, and it was during those many rehearsals that we really got to know each other and flirted up a storm. By opening night, he'd asked me out. The rest is history, and I love that I can hang a piece of that history on the wall.

The print by the window is of a girl knitting while the boy plays guitar. That's us. Mason jars hold wooden spools and antique clothespins, and the sheep on the nightstand is there to watch over my wool and ensure our guests get a good night's sleep.

On the right wall is a shelf stuffed with yarn, my jar of knitting needles, and the glass head which is currently displaying a hat my brother gave me but will soon enough model stuff I've made. Above that is my inspiration board, and in the corner is my sewing basket which was a gift from my mom.

Behind the door is a rocking chair, which was a wedding gift from Rob's grandparents. And immediately to the right of the door is this, my favorite spot. More yarn! And some ribbon, too, for good measure.

So THAT exact Pooh border was the inspiration for our first nursery in our first house. Hm, wish I could show you a picture. We have all the crib and decor stuff that goes with that exact border...like Pooh exploded in our youngest's room. I'm actually getting ready to permanently retire the Pooh decor, and haven't yet decided what the new theme for Alex's room will be. But your's is GREAT! I love that yellow.
"flirted up a storm"?! OMG; i think i'm in love!
I love this room. It is like you take exactly what I wish my house would look like and then you make it even better. Impressive. Really fantastic.
I love it! That wall color looks exactly like the color we painted the great room in our house, and I love it for the same reason. We get so much light in that room and it really glows first thing in the morning. Such a warm, cozy color!
before i had a home i read an article (with pics) of a woman who had a house that was simple, yet still beautiful. She said in the article, "When asked how I decorated, I said, I simply only keep things that I feel are beautiful or mean something heartfelt to me".
This is a perfect example of that type of decorating. Bravo! Gorgeous.
Awesome looking Guestudio.
Kelly, it looks fantastic!!! Awesome job and I love the color as well--really opens up the room. And that's great that you still have that painted window hanging. Ah, memories!
It's a good Pooh, MM. I really liked the colors of that border - nice shades of blue, green, and yellow.
Hee, RD. :)
Aww, thank you, MayB!
Ooh, it would indeed be a fabulous color for a great room, geeky!
What a lovely compliment, jana. Thank you.
Thanks, William!
Just think, doreen! The next time you all come to stay you won't be surrounded by Pooh! Woohoo!
"Shades of blue, green, and yellow" Pooh?! No wonder kids laugh over grossness! ;)
p.s. your use of a comma after "green" made me way happier than it should've. grammarnerd!
What a cozy guestroom. Surrounded by softness and old-fashioned decor; it is just lovely. I'm particularly fond of the knitting bookshelf.
I'm teaching myself to knit, and while I find it one of the most relaxing things I've ever done, I really still have no idea what I'm doing. The day I actually manage to make a scarf I think I might have to throw myself a party.
One day, I plan to hole up in your Guestudio. Just so you know...
Ha! That's too funny, RD!
Thanks, Danielle!
Hi Kerri Anne! Good for you - you'll get there! Although I haven't actually finished a scarf yet myself. I got bored and moved on to bowls and such.
Robyn! You're welcome in the Guestudio anytime. You should totally come visit.
What a fantastic room! It's filled with so much cool stuff I'd need more than a cursory tour. Maybe even an hour or two to check out everything!
Come visit me, Kranki, and you can take all the time you need! :)
