taking measure

kelly  |  15 December 2008 - 9:15pm

MayB has honored me with an award!

In receiving it, I am to say something nice about my man, list 6 ways I measure success in life, and then bestow the award upon 6 others.

About Rob: He takes things in stride and puts up with my shit. Also see here, an entire category comprised mostly of me saying nice things about him. Along with the occasional mocking.

About success: I don't have a good answer for this, frankly. I can't say I spend much time considering how to be Successful, or what that even means. I guess, in general, being successful to me is being on top of my shit, even if that's just small things: managing a busy schedule, keeping things organized, maintaining friendships, eating right, not killing anyone in my sleep. On a much broader scope, I suppose success to me is similar to happiness. I feel successful if I'm content with the life I'm living. I suppose what I strive for is Maslow's idea of self-actualization. I like to explore and grow, through travel or reading or trying something new. This is sometimes a struggle, as my biggest ideas can be thwarted by my fear of failure. And that I have a fear of failure is rather ironic considering I don't have a definition for success.

And now I'm pleased to recognize...

  • Poop and Boogies - One of the best blogs I read. Humorous and human. I adore William and his entire family.
  • Doc Ern - She's smart, strong, and sincere. And even though I've never met her, her posts are like letters from a good friend.
  • What Was I Thinking? - Susie exudes grace, compassion, and humor no matter the situation. More than any other blogger, she has affected the way I view things, and I think everyone who reads her would say the same.
  • Janasayqua - Jana's posts always make me smile. She's got a great way of portraying everyday moments. She also has the best blog name ever (although I won't say how long I read her before I figured it out...seems I'm not as smart as I'd like to think I am.)
  • Simply Geeky - Great cook, awesome photographer, and also a computer geek. And she loves crossword puzzles. This is probably the woman Rob should have married. But anyway. Her blog is a reflection of her interests and is always fresh and fun.
  • Fat Orange Cat - I love Karyn's style, and by that I mean both the items she creates and her aura. She's very cool, and her blog (and Etsy shop) has lots of beautiful things. Even her cats are ridiculously gorgeous.

(Those recognized should feel welcome but not obligated to participate.)

Thanks again to MayB! Her blog is also one that's worth a visit. I always enjoy her perspective, and lately she's been posting a daily list of things for which she's thankful. Also, she's Canadian. I love Canadians.

psst! does nils know you love canadians?! because if he finds out, then i'm afraid he'll think he's your favorite. you must let him know that owen is actually all of our favorite canadian.

RzDrms  |  15 December 2008 - 10:04pm

by the way, i'm loving this week's tagline by doreen! i didn't understand what "k-street" meant, so i played dumb (smart?) and pretended like i did for a whole week.

William  |  15 December 2008 - 10:09pm

Wait a minute....Nils is a Canadian.

Thanks for the link and the kind words. What you said about Susie is so true. She has affected the way I view things as well. I will point my wife in the direction Fat Orange cat with the whole sewing thing.

I read Doc and I will have to start checking out Geeky., I mean I know that Geeky is an Eagles fan so that is great.

Are the knives back? Did you put some kind of alarm on them in case someone grabs one in the middle of night?

Susie  |  16 December 2008 - 8:35am

Well, I know what I'm going to read when I'm feeling droopy and under-appreciated. This post, that's what. Thank you for saying such kind things; "hearing" that someone thinks that about me and my silly little blog -- means more to me than you can imagine, I'm sure. Kindness and encouragement are in such short supply these days. I really, truly thank you for increasing that supply.

(You, too, William.)

And you know that I say your blog totally Measures Up. Still eagerly awaiting your book.

geeky  |  16 December 2008 - 8:50am

Aw, thanks for the ego boost! I needed it today. I stayed up too late watching the Eagles win MNF last night and I woke up cranky.

Also, I should point out that the great cook thing could all just be an illusion. I mean, sure, I take pictures of food, but for all you know it could taste really awful. :)

Oh, and one more thing: I don't think there's any doubt that Rob married the right woman!

Karyn  |  16 December 2008 - 9:06am

Ego boost indeed! Thank you so very much for your kind words about me and my blog and the things I create. But especially about my cats. You know.

I like your definition of success. It's hard to make a list of just six things and let that be that. I'll give it a shot on my own blog.

Off to check out the other blogs you listed.....

Rz, K Street is where a lot of the lobbyists have offices in DC. (And I did not know this until Rob told me.)

William, the knives are still stashed away. I'm afraid if I bring them back out, that act alone will put them in my subconscious.... We may never use that knife block again.

Susie, feel free to come here when you're feeling underappreciated...but when you're droopy, a support bra might better do the trick.

Ha, geeky! I actually had that thought - that I have no way of actually knowing whether you're a great cook or just can make pretty food. Either way, you should totally do the photography for a cookbook.

Karyn, somehow one's cats are always one's greatest accomplishment. Or at least the cats think so, anyway. :)

Ern  |  17 December 2008 - 2:15am

Aww, thank you for the kind words! And I feel the same way about reading your posts. I'm quite certain that if we met we'd be good friends.

I plan to participate, but I'm already behind by one blog tag, so it may be a few days. :) Besides, I have to give some thought to my definitions of success too.

Susie  |  17 December 2008 - 8:49am

Oh, no, you're much better than a bra:

Aw thanks Kelly!! I've never won an award, especially not about talking about nonsense, which is my life.

I am so thankful for my blog friends, I'm so glad I have this 'world' to be a part of.

You are definitely deserving of an award yourself. I enjoy and look forward to your posts!

kelly  |  18 December 2008 - 10:58pm

No pressure, Ern. I sat on it for over a week myself. And someday we will get together - we must!

Oh, Susie, I am SO using that. Nicely done.

I'm so glad for this world too, jana. And I think daily life stuff (especially nonsensical) can make for the best blogging sometimes.
