sounds of my silence

There's a preschool next to where I work, and as I was walking out to the parking lot one day last week, I could hear the squeak of a swingset and the happy yelling laughter of children. It immediately took me back to my days of elementary school. It also made me think about how saturated the world is in sound and how I don't even notice most of the time.
So as I'm trying to tune out politics right now, I'm also making an effort to notice noise. Some sounds I'm finding particularly satisfying:
- the crunch of leaves, especially in the woods where there's a thick layer
- rain pattering on our metal roof
- D-Fiddy's shutter opening and closing
- a deck of cards being fanned and shuffled
- the crackling of a fire
- the solid click of a metal deadbolt
- the crunching-paper sound my computer makes when I empty the trash
- purring

What a good idea! The purring is one of my faves. I loves me some purring.
I think crunching leaves is a great part of fall and make a point of walking through piles. Great way to notice what is going on around you!
kids' laughter: overly gratifying
Kids playing and laughing is one of the best sounds ever...until it becomes noise then it sucks and I have to threaten them that I will take their bat and their ball and I will call the police if they don't get off of my yard. Then I pull my pants up to my chest and shake my fist at them.
I'm sorry that the election has taken its toll on you. You are smart to have a media blackout. Trust me - it's just getting worse the closer we get.
I got to hear 2 of my favorite sounds last night... the sound of a bottle of Labatts opening, and the words "Phillies Win Game 1 of the World Series!" :-)
What about the crinkling sound of a bag of chocolate as you open it to partake?
And the sound of the tea kettle whistling (or coffee brewing if that is your caffeine of choice)?
The crunch of eating chips - which I eat so rarely, that it is a real pleasure.
Do you notice how most of mine are food related?
;-)
I've always loved the sound of shuffling cards, too.
Hello, dear. Love. Hugs.
