Yesterday we returned from a long weekend in Florida with JLD & HFD, a trip during which I GOT TO SWIM WITH DOLPHINS! I have been bursting to talk about this, but given my history with the universe, I knew better than to blog about it in advance this time. In fact, I have been afraid to talk about it at all in more than a whisper, so worried the universe would make note of my excitement and ruin everything. One night last week, JLD was later getting home than he thought he'd be, and HFD told me that she woke up around midnight, realized he wasn't home yet, and her first sleepy thought was that he'd been in an accident because of the dolphins, because that was the way the universe had decided to keep me from them this time. Totally within the realm of possibility, people. But fortunately there was no accident. Nor was there a hurricane or canceled flight or sudden dolphin plague or any of the other 1000 potential disasters I had imagined might possibly prevent me from swimming with the dolphins.

Rob and JLD spent Friday at an aviation convention while HFD and I went to Discovery Cove where we got to play with sting rays and snorkel with tropical fish and, you know, SWIM WITH DOLPHINS! HFD's dream job is to be a dolphin trainer and I have always wanted to be a mermaid so, as you can imagine, for the two of us this was one of the Best Days EVER.

HFD and me, so freaking excited!

Swimming! With CJ the dolphin!

Smooching with dolphins

It seems I can check this off my life list now, although I'm not sure there's any point because I'd just turn around and add the very same item back to the list. These creatures are so exquisite, and the experience so enchanting, that I only hope I have the opportunity to do this many more times in my life.

I got the chance to swim with dolphins once and I totally agree that they are amazing?! I had a camera hanging from my wrist and one of the dolphins did not come to me until I took it off. Then I swear she was watching me for the rest of the time. They are so curious. Add that right back onto your list for SURE!

MayB  |  14 April 2008 - 8:58pm

I'm so excited for you! Congratulations. I got to do it this winter and it was the scariest thing I've ever done.

Ern  |  14 April 2008 - 10:15pm

Yay, I'm so excited for you!

Allie  |  14 April 2008 - 10:22pm

So, so happy for you!!! And you were very smart to not mention it beforehand- that's tempting fate, like saying, "Hey, look how high my bank balance is!"

curious jane  |  14 April 2008 - 10:59pm

So...I want to know. Which would you recommend more? Smooching dolphins, or riding a fucking camel?

RzDrms  |  14 April 2008 - 11:23pm

kelly's list ostensibly grows

(CONGRATS!!!)

UCM  |  14 April 2008 - 11:48pm

When I wrote that I was living vicariously through you, I totally forgot that you didn't get to swim with the dophins that time and just took a picture with a, um, statue.

But NOW. NOW I can live vicariously through you. You guys look so stinkin' cute, and I obviously need to get a life.

kelly  |  14 April 2008 - 11:58pm

They do seem very aware of everything, Jenski. And quite self-aware, even. Love them.

Being next to one, MayB, I was reminded just how large dolphins are. And still so effortlessly graceful.

Thanks, Ern!!

Yes, I'm often careful not to curse myself, Allie. Looking back on it, I have no idea why I mentioned the dolphin-swimming the first time. Stupid.

Smooching dolphins, jane. (I might perhaps have slipped CJ some tongue. Not saying that I did, just that I might have.) But both are awesome, and I did especially like the way one, um, mounts a camel.

Good one, Rz. And thanks!

UCM, I noticed that and was totally afraid you had cursed me!! I didn't have the nerve to correct you, for fear of the universe. I even told HFD that if something happened at the last minute, it would be completely your fault. ;)

nicole  |  15 April 2008 - 4:09am

AWWWW!!! I love the picture of the smooching. Too cute.

doreen  |  15 April 2008 - 7:11am

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

That's all I have to say about that.

Up next?! Doing you know what in you know where...with me!! Can't wait! :)

William  |  15 April 2008 - 8:16am

That is awesome.

and as far as Doreen's comment....I am quite intrigued.

Nils  |  15 April 2008 - 8:52am

I'm so happy for you. And deeply impressed that you swam with dolphins without getting the cute haircut with highlights even a little bit wet!

Because I have been occasionally accused of lowering the tone of the discussion, I will refrain from commenting on your enjoyment of mounting fucking camels.

But Doreen: I am not a "what", I am a "who". And "you know where" is my tiny Island.

HFD  |  15 April 2008 - 9:29am

One of my co-workers was just looking at my pictures, and she said "The dolphin looks so happy!" I told her that it was because we were there - obviously.

RzDrms  |  15 April 2008 - 3:11pm

i suppose i should admit that, when i saw this week's tagline early yesterday morning (before you wrote this post), i thought for sure that the kind leaping ocean geniuses were you and rob, jumping over the ocean to europe or elsewhere recently with your passports that you'd said were in your purse. i was all, "ooooo, a fun adventure in italy/australia/russia for me to read about!" swimming with dolphins is just as good, though! :)

kelly  |  15 April 2008 - 10:13pm

nicole, that's my favorite one, too. I totally framed it.

Yay, doreen!!!!

All I'll say, William, is that Doreen and I have always been very adventurous together.

I'm disappointed, Nils. I thought for sure you'd be the one to point out that, in the second photo, I'm totally humping the dolphin. You have a reputation to maintain, dude. Embrace it.

Definitely because we were there, HFD. I know CJ misses us now. I wonder if the Orange Tilt woman misses us, too... ;)

You're not far off, Rz. There's more to come. Soon!

nils  |  15 April 2008 - 11:15pm

THAT is why the dolphin looks happy. "Finally - a woman with long enough arms!"

LadyBug  |  16 April 2008 - 9:25am

Ah, now the tagline makes sense. Congrats on fulfilling your dream, dear. AND on looking spectacular while doing it.

kelly  |  16 April 2008 - 7:47pm

Nils, the trainer told us that CJ is a total flirt, that all the female dolphins swoon over him. Total stud muffin.

Thanks, LadyBug. Much love to you.

Momo  |  16 April 2008 - 11:49pm

OMG...I'm soooooooo jealous! How cool is that, you got to swim with Dolphins. I am jealous, but seriously happy that you got to fulfill a dream.

Gotta go plan my trip to discovery cove...

Danielle  |  17 April 2008 - 10:18am

I don't quite get why swimming with the dolphins brings out the insurance ads.... but who knows.

Anyway, I love the photos. I ended up Not swimming with the dolphins while I was down in Key Largo and now I'm wishing I had.

Maybe there will be a next time.

von Krankipantzen  |  17 April 2008 - 1:30pm

So so so so so so jealous. Looks so freakin' amazing! Yay! So excited for you.

I want a t-shirt that reads "CJ is my Homedolphin"

kelly  |  19 April 2008 - 11:09pm

Hi Momo! Good to see you here! I do highly recommend swimming with dolphins - you would love it!

I missed my first opportunity to do it too, Danielle. I will say that it definitely makes it all the more amazing when you finally get to, though!

And a tshirt that says "dolphinjoyment", Kranki. That was awesome.
