having reservations

What is up with restaurants not taking reservations? The past couple years I've noticed that this is becoming more and more of a trend, and I find it highly annoying.
Most fine dining restaurants still take reservations, but typically when I'm making reservations it's because we have additional plans for the evening, like a play or concert, and we don't have extra time to dawdle at dinner. And so fine dining is not even an option since those places take much longer. In those instances, I just want to have dinner at a nice bar & grill type place.
And since our evening schedule will be tight and we won't have time to wait 20-40 minutes for a table, I call the restaurant a few days in advance to make reservations. And I am told they don't take them. So I call another place. They don't take them either. So I call another. And another. One doesn't take reservations but does offer "call-ahead seating." Um, isn't that what I'm doing? I am calling ahead. For seating. Yeah, turns out I'm calling too far ahead. They don't want me to call more than 20 minutes ahead, basically as we're heading out the door. If I call then, they'll put my name on the waiting list. But it's not a reservation. They don't do reservations. DON'T SAY RESERVATION.
I suppose if an establishment is busy enough, they know they'll fill their tables and so it's not worth their while to deal with reservations. But for the love of god, are we no longer capable of making long-term commitments? And by "long-term" I mean three days. Can restaurants really not offer their customers the basic consideration of a reservation? Have so many people bailed on reservations that they've ruined it for the rest of us?
Maybe this doesn't bother most people, but I am a person who plans. I'm a planner. Planning is what I do. And these damn restaurants that don't take reservations are seriously fucking up my plans.

This is such a HUGE PET PEEVE of mine. We don't even try to go out to dinner on the weekends here, because NO PLACES take reservations. And on a Friday or Saturday night we are almost guaranteed a 40-60 minute wait. At least. RIDICULOUS. I'm so glad I'm not alone on this.
they should actually just say to us that they have sincere reservations about making reservations; you know, to be clear.
and, ummm, by the way, how would you feel if you made reservations at a restaurant only to find out that they were closed on the very night you'd specifically reserved?! oh. wait. that did happen to you. ;) (and re-reading that seriously made me all teary and shit. ::sniff::)
Yes. More people bail on reservations at bar and grill type places than you can imagine.
i'm with you. except around here, reservations are taken for parties of 5 or more. which is a side of the mouth way of saying, we don't take reservations.
Ah yes. This is also a pet peeve of mine. Although we seem to be lucking out most of the time and are being allowed to make reservations at most places we go.
I'm with you, Ern. I'd totally write a letter if I knew to whom to send it.
Ohmygosh, Rz, I'd forgotten that part! Thank you for referencing it- because seriously, that shit ain't right! (I miss you!)
Yeah, William, I can believe that. But I'm one of the good ones - I even call to confirm! They should have a blacklist for no-shows, like for bounced checks. Then people like me who always show up could still be allowed to make reservations.
kristen, a couple places here have told me the same thing, only it's for parties of 10 or more. In other words, if you're renting a freaking ROOM, then they'll make reservations for you. Maybe.
Danielle, it's because you're Dr. Danielle. A Ph.D. totally comes with special privileges, like restaurant reservations. :)
I have the same peeve as you. I mean if I am going to get my ass off the couch, put on clean and decent clothes as well as make-up and do my hair all nice, drive somewhere, look and pay for parking I sure as hell am not going to take any chances for a table wait-time over 10 minutes or a full restaurant. No way!
with 3 kids now, going to a restaurant that would require a reservation is pretty much unhead of anyway, but I know what you mean.
Since we'll be going to Disney in a month, we can make "Priority Seating" but they are not considered a true 'reservation'. WTF?
Merry Christmas! I hope you have a terrific holiday with Rob and your family.
Without reservation, I wish you a very Merry Christmas :)
How did the booze go over with grandma?
Hi Honey.
merry christmas to you and all yours.
