random shit for which I'm thankful, 2007
kelly | 21 November 2007 - 8:35am
At Curves, members were asked to write on a sheet of paper what we are thankful for, and then they were posted on the walls for everyone to read. Interestingly, the vast majority listed the same three things in the same order: God, my family, this country. A few were different, and one in particular stood out to me and was by far my favorite. It was written by a teenage girl, a fact made obvious by the i's dotted with big circles and the content. It read: my awesome friends, my adorable boyfriend, Andy Warhol, Trent Reznor, mac & cheese.
In that same spirit, I continue my tradition of listing the little things for which I'm thankful. (Lists from 2005 and 2006.)
- vibrant autumn colors
- belly kisses
- the house dip at my favorite sandwich shop
- veterinarians
- the big window in my office
- our swanky upscale grocery store
- that all my close friends have found partners
- snow days
- cities - New York and Chicago in particular
- polka dots
- working out with my mom
- that moment of relief upon waking from a dream in which I was either lost, back in college, or pregnant
- bacon
- talking on the phone with my brother
- the mountains
- getting 40 mpg
- the shade of red that I get my highlights in
- snuggling after hitting snooze
- kitty purrs
- the last 2:45 of LoveStoned (the "I Think She Knows" interlude)
- that feeling of exhilaration after a good run
- my dad's crinkle-eyed laugh
- The New York Times online
- my grandparents' farmhouse filled with family
- mac & cheese

I'm thankful for our swanky upscale grocery store too! :)
I think you stole that last one from the teenage girl. :)
Happy Thanksgiving!
you get forty miles-per-gallon of gasoline in your car?! lucky, lucky dog. now you must tell me what kind of car you have so i can go buy one. i just paid almost $50 for a tank of gas for my honda (about 16 gallons)!
So you're a fan of the NON-pregnant belly kisses, huh?
Happy Thanksgiving!
You and John Mayer both!

I love your list- especially being thankful for vegetarians. I do eat meat, but I believe the meat does not have to be part of every meal.
geeky, did you earn enough points to get a free turkey? I didn't, but I was close!
It's true, Sharkey. But then, who isn't thankful for mac & cheese? Yum.
I get that in my 2001 Honda Civic, Rz. It's a manual transmission, which helps with the mileage.
Pregnant belly kisses are quite lovely, Ern, as long as it's not my pregnant belly. :)
I saw that yesterday, HFD, and was stunned that John Mayer feels the same way about that song as I do. Enough to announce it to the world. So then I felt validated enough in my musical tastes to include it in this list. (I mean, if John Mayer agrees, then I must be right! Maybe?) Ever since I first got that song, I will play that part over and over and over again. And Mayer is right - it should totally be its own longer song.
Hee, you made me giggle, dawn. I listed veterinarians, not vegetarians. Not that I'm not thankful for vegetarians, I guess, although with my bacon addiction I could surely never join them.
I did get enough points for a free turkey! But since there's only two of us, I opted for the $10 off instead. They were nice enough to give it to me even though I left my receipt with the coupon at home. I heart that place!
haaa, I'm glad I read the comments. I was all, "what happened to the bacon?" heee
I love Thanksgiving, and thanksgiving, and your list. And because so many of my formative years were spent "in the hills," listening to hillbilly radio, the lists of your Curves folk have me singing, "Thank God and Greyhound You're Gone." Dunno why.
As a Canadian, I'm sorta poaching on your Thanksgiving here. But I don't need a special day to be thankful that I found this place and found you and Rob and your family and friends.
Happy Thanksgiving, darlin' ...
Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you and Rob have a really enjoyable day. :-)
Happy Turkey Day Rob and Kelly.
We are having the sunniest, driest, Thanksgiving ever.
Thankful for wonderful people in the world that make you smile even if they are miles and miles and miles away.
I would have gone that route too, geeky. I'll let my mama take care of the turkey for as long as she's willing.
That's one I haven't heard, Susie, although it seems perhaps I'm the lesser for it. I mean, the alliteration alone.... :)
Thank you, dear Nils. I also feel honored to know you and yours.
To you as well, Danielle!
Lovely sentiment, greenie. Thank you.
Kelly, You rock. I hope you have a great holiday season.
i love thankful lists.
and i sooo join you in your giving thanks for the "i think she knows" interlude- i thought i was the only one in love with that little interlude, even over a year after listening to it! oh, and i'm totally with you on the belly kisses too, and i have a whole new level of gratitude for them this year!
i would like to add, coincidentally, after reading your comments, that i am thankful for my free turkey! (i found out after friends from redneck valley visited that we actually do have your swanky upscale grocery store here too, but here its called giant. luckily i've been shopping there ever since we moved here so i had the points for the free bird. shoo, what a relief- both that i'm not missing out on a great food store and that i could get 22 pounds of meat free!)
oh, and i'm very, very thankful to know you & rob. add that, too.
Those are some very good things to be thankful for. I hope bacon was part of your Thanksgiving meal in some way.
Same to you, William!
When I hear that interlude now, nicole, I'll think of you (and, oddly, John Mayer). And we're very thankful to know you and B, too, and are looking forward to meeting the new little fella soon!
Sadly, Kranki, it wasn't. But you can bet it will be part of breakfast this morning. :)
