robservation #12: happiness is... a geeky line graph
rob | 23 July 2007 - 8:40pm
You may have noticed that there has been a flurry of recent bliss bits and relatively few bitch sessions on klog lately. Thinking that this is surely an indicator of Kelly's increased happiness, I set out to quantify it.
I compiled the historical data covering blog posts from the beginning of klog in February 2005, comparing the number of bliss bits to the number of bitch sessions on a monthly basis. Subtracting the number of bitch sessions from the number of bliss bits yields that month's "balance of happiness" indicator. This number ranges from 5 to -5 with an average just barely above zero (there have been 46 bliss bits as opposed to 42 bitch sessions over 2.5 years of klog).
You may think this is a crude measure, but I challenge you to find a clearer, more objective, and more quantifiable indicator of happiness. The results are summarized in the line graph below; I'll let you draw your own conclusions about the trends.

too funny - shouldn't there also be a continuum involving the subject of bliss/bitch? maybe more points should be given if the subject involved rob, shoes, cute haircuts with highlights, john stamos, or target...
well, it's prettttty obvious to me that there's been a whole lotta...um...graphin' goin' on over the last few months! you lucky...lucky...graphers! ;-P
The interpretation of data on your bliss/bitch graph cleary points to the fact that you are a female.
Everything is always so much clearer when quantified and clearly graphed.
Talk nerdy to me, Rob. (Just kidding Kelly!)
I am extremely disappointed with the lack of a trendline on your graph, Rob.
I just love this. And look! I am getting happier. I'll reach a zenlike state in no time.
Two things I notice on the graph - July 2005 is when our air conditioner kept dying and yeah, I was basically cranky that entire month. Also, I'd say my recent streak of frequent bliss bits is due to having a better appreciation for things after overcoming my health issues earlier this year (although I like Rz's theory better!).
It appears to me that she only gets her period on the odd months.
Ingenious! See, that's the kind of thing a geek can bring to a relationship. Analytical models.
Rob, you've got a granularity problem... if you can get her to post more often, you'll have better information. You'll know when to take cover, um, I mean, buy flowers. As it is now, by the time you're in a downswing, you'd probably know it already anyway.
it's so nice of rob to make kelly's laughter observation graph! and i had to giggle at william's comment.
I'm suddenly wishing I had an easy way to graph my happiness now! This is fascinating.
I just have to say, Rob's graph sent my giggle meter off the charts. Hee!
