kiddies

Photo taken by Rob

I sometimes think about what our cats would be like if they were kids. Which is probably weird, but whatever.

In a preschool class, Maylee would be the kid trying to fit the square block into the round hole, the cute but clueless one with absent, doelike eyes and a head constantly cocked sideways in confusion. Preferring to be in her own little world, she'd sit alone at a table coloring, ankles daintily crossed.

Simon would be the shy one who hides behind his mom's leg when strangers are speaking to him, the timid kid who wants to play with the others but tends to get overlooked or ignored. A picky eater, he'd refuse to try new foods at lunch but demonstrate a peculiar propensity for eating rubber bands (surely just to get attention).

And Bridget would be the one bossing everyone else around, stealing toys, demanding more snacks, and shrieking at the top of her lungs when she doesn't get her way. And then charming the teacher by giving her hugs and hand-picked flowers, and crawling into her lap during storytime, so as to remain the teacher's pet.

First: What an utterly exquisite photo. Kudos, Rob.

Second: I am amused by your anthropomorphism. I wonder which one would trigger the parent - teacher conference that starts with "We're a little concerned that your child spends an inordinate amount of time licking its ass."

Andrea  |  17 July 2007 - 11:10pm

oooh, can i play too? (i was always the overeager one who tried too hard to be accepted...;))

my kitties...lucy would be the know-it-all who jumps into conversations she's not included in, the teacher's pet who knows every answer and answers even if the teacher has already called on someone else (think hermione granger)

and linus would be the quiet kid, maybe a little chubby (what??), the last one you would expect to play a prank...but you'd better think again. sly hidden sense of humor.

and that IS a really great photo!

Nudge would ride the short bus. He would be the skinny, pale kid with an inhaler and five different medications, as well as a milk allergy. But he'd be the sweetest little boy.

I thouhgt I had something witty to say, then I read Nilbo's comment and it flew right out of my head.

like nilbo said, this is a FABULOUS picture. i hope its in a cool frame hanging in your house somewhere.

but okay, kalki, i tried to warn you, but i can't stall it any longer. your cats as preschoolers? it's official: you are the crazy cat lady.

i wouldn't even flinch if your next post told us about how you and rob dressed them, brushed their teeth, and put them on the school bus and actually sent them to preschool.

:) i love you so much. :)

First of all Nilbo, butt-licking aside, my cats have excellent potty skills, which is not something one could necessarily say about the rest of their hypothetical preschool class. Secondly, my mom teaches kindergarten, and I promise you she's initiated even more bizarre discussions at parent-teacher conferences...

Yay, I'm glad you guys played, too! I wanted to ask where your pets would fit in, but whenever I ask a question nobody responds. Better to let it happen naturally....so thanks for initiating, Andrea! I love your descriptions. Your cats' names seem well chosen. :) And I think Simon and Linus could be friends.

Ern, you're cracking me up with the inhaler and milk allergy! I totally knew that kid.

It's just nice having you here, William. :)

Oh, nicole, if you only knew. I might perhaps once have suggested to Rob that we put the cats in pajamas each night and brush their teeth. This was back when we had to put Maylee in a onesie. Without a doubt, I have issues. Quite clearly a crazy cat lady. (Love you too!)

Consider yourself lucky our cats don't attend the same imaginary preschool. Oliver would be that kid you look at and go, "Really? Preschool? I would have thought grade eight or nine." And furthermore, he'd be a bully.

And Ducky? She'd be the class crybaby.

This picture is absolutely beautiful. Your cat is beautiful as well. I love her markings. Or whatever the hell it's called. She is one fine looking cat.

kelly  |  19 July 2007 - 10:55pm

Hi Allie! So your cats would be the ones who nobody would want to give birthday party invitations or Valentines to, except their moms would make them....

Thanks, pat. That's Maylee - she takes after me. Oh, I kid. ;)
