dubai in july

Later this week Rob and I are leaving for a trip to Dubai. I know, right?! This whole thing has come to be, since this post, in a bit of a serendipitous way. A friend recently told me that things he wants just seem to materialize somehow. Like, he was wishing for a GPS unit and the next day a friend stopped by with one and said, "Hey, are you at all interested in this? Because I don't need it anymore." That's pretty much how this whole trip thing happened.
We're not spending all of our time in Dubai - we're also going to Oman. We're traveling with Mr. Mojo and a friend of his. This will be unlike any trip Rob and I have ever taken. Dubai (especially) and Oman are considered much more liberal and accepting than most of the Middle East, but there will still be times we'll be out of our comfort zone. But that's a good thing - I'm eager to experience a culture and see a landscape so unlike what we're accustomed to here. (But the weather, not so much...105-115 degrees, people!!)
Packing for this trip is a challenge, just because it is going to be hella-fucking-HOT there and also because I have to dress conservatively. (For the places we're going, that means keeping knees and shoulders covered, and not wearing anything too tight or with a plunging neckline.) I never wear shorts anyway, so the knees thing is not even an issue. But, all my summer shirts show skin, so the tricky part has been to find tops that are lightweight and cool but not skimpy.
But perhaps most challenging was finding a top to wear clubbing. (Clubs are the one place where women can wear - or not wear - whatever the hell they want.) I'm not the clubbing type, but going to a club in Dubai is one of those cultural experiences one must do. I was advised by several friends that I should wear something that is "barely tied on," that "shows the midriff," and that "has sequins." Basically, something that makes me look like a hooch. So I went shopping, because I don't have a single hoochy thing in my closet. And by "went shopping" I mean that I took Rob to a skanky-clothes store and told him to pick out something hot for me. He had way more fun than I expected. Which is not to say he was terribly successful, because I turned down pretty much every item he suggested. Because, frankly, I consider myself too classy to wear that shit. And it's not like I'm trying to catch a guy. I mean, the only man I'm after already sees me nude - how is any clothing ensemble going to compete with that? We finally settled on a black top that laces up the front and would actually be fairly modest except that it's a size too small and thus can't lace up tight. It shows some skin and a little cleavage (you know, what little there is) but mostly suggests my curves without actually revealing them (which, if you ask me, is way sexier and also, you know, classier). But I'm just hoping it says COME RIP MY BODICE, BABY and not I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT A MEDIUM.

Linen could be your friend in Dubai.
Many place have the dress code rule. Basically, they are happy so long as you do not look like you just stepped out a night club or that you charge by the hour.
Take a light-weight sweater with you...drape it over your shoudlers when in certain places and all is well in the polite world. If you are out sightseeing and wish to enter a temple or the likes, a sarong is a good thing to have as well. Easy to wrap around your shoulders or knees AND lightweight material.
Take lots of pictures! :)
have fun and be safe!
(and when you get home, you can say that kelly loved oman greatly!)
Thanks for the pic of you in the bodice-shirt. It IS a little umm ... attention-grabbing, but I don't think it's all that skanky. Rob has good taste and evidently seeing you nude has not caused him to be too jaded.
I think it's a shame, though, that you won't share the pic with all your other faithful readers. I feel badly for them. They're really missing out.
That said, I hope you have a wonderful time in Dubya. I hear they have rooms with double beds there.
Have fun and stay safe.
I think your closet needs some hoochiness.
Why in the hell have I not seen a picture of this top?
Dubai? I'm so flippin thrilled for you!
good one, yonz! it's probably best that we mislead nilbo and never tell him that kalki flashed both of us when we were lucky enough to meet her; it'd probably make him real jealous since all he's gettin' is pix of her in a shirt! psshaaw! ;)
You're going to Dubai! I'm so freakin' thrilled for you! You guys have fun and BE SAFE. I can't wait to hear all about it.
I'm so excited for you. You only wrote about this, what? Like a month ago! I hope you guys have a great time and can't wait to see the photos.
Nilbo, you are so full of it! :)
K, have a great time, but echoing everyone else, be safe! Even if those countries are technically at peace right now, it's still a dangerous part of the world to be in. But let me bracket that by saying again, have a FANTASTIC time!
What? No photos?
(hmph)
Wow! What cool news! Have a great time- and thank God for serendipity! (Although you never really revealed how this case of serendipity came to be- but that's okay, i much enjoyed reading about the hoochiness. i trust the shirt would be nicole-approved, myabe even nicole-inspired?...)
Hey!!! There is a sexy photo of you out there?!?!?! Cough it up!!!
Sounds so wonderfully exotic. Have a fabulous time.
Oh, dude. I am so excited that you get to go on your serendipitous Dubai trip! And also, I must say I just love you and your hawt, bodice-ripping craziness...
Have fun, hootchie-momma.
How interesting that it is okay to show skin while clubbing, but not otherwise. I wonder how you get too and from the club without offending people. odd.
But that is great news on your trip! I hope you have a terrific time!
omg, wow, you're going to Dubai! I used to live there (well, in Abu Dhabi, one city over.) It really is a magneficent place. I would reccomend places, but since I was last there almost 7 years ago, can't really say much. Go visit the corniche in Abu Dhabi, it's gorgeous, with all the fountains and gardens, etc. Oh, and the big blue building with the white golf-ball looking thing on top? That's the infamous Etisalat building, office of the phone service provider for the whole country. Just a bit of trivia :) If you can, also go to Al Ain (it's just outside of Abu Dhabi)--It has gorgeous gardens and an amusement park, although it's not that great from what I remember. R'as Al Khaimah {another city} has an awesome water park, but it may be a bit out of your way. But if you can, definitely go there. Also, go see the wind towers in Dubai, they're awesome. I hope you have an amazing trip. Take lots of pictures!
oh, and speaking of pictures, take a picture of the blue and green diamondbacked funnel thing in the Dubai International Airport if you go there. it's the coolest looking thing. You'll know what I'm talking about when you see it :P
Well, my my, Dubai! How exciting! I stand vicarious. And a bit jeliss. But only of the trip, not of you, my tight tied up darling.
