blown away by the windy city

In keeping with the metaphor of cities as lovers, Chicago is the one who, after just a few dates, has serious potential to be my lifelong love. I will always have a passion for New York, but the place is too big for me to wrap myself around. Chicago has diversity and energy and opportunities but on a more convenient scale. I felt I could really get to know Chicago - all its nooks and crannies. In Chicago there is great shopping, fantastic parks and green space, a beautiful waterfront, and a variety of cultural events I was actually interested in. And the city was friendly to visitors but, unlike San Francisco, didn't give me the impression that it had no purpose other than to be an amusement park.
Never has a city caused me to laugh in delight so many times. Like when, near the art institute, I saw a table of chess boards set up on the sidewalk, encouraging people to play, for free, with friends or strangers. And when I watched the chimps do somersaults at Lincoln Park Zoo. And when I discovered the Lily Pool (which is where my new masthead photo was taken). And when I gazed into the city's reflection at Cloud Gate.
Of course, the city's major flaw, which I did not experience, is the freaking COLD. I wouldn't survive one winter. And so, sadly, Chicago and I aren't quite a match made in heaven. But, in all other ways, Chicago is doing everything right to woo me.

I think Philly should be your lover. Because it has almost everything Chicago has to offer but less cold. I like the new masthead.
You need to see Chicago's Chinatown sometime if you haven't already. It's not New York or San Francisco, but still not bad ('course I haven't been to the other two, but it's much closer to me than they are!). And the best dimsum is at the Phoenix on Archer Avenue. YUM.
beautiful!!!
I completely missed your birthday and it is even on my calendar. So sorry. Glad you had a good one. I had been concentrating on preparing for Catherine's birthday :)
But I must say that I love San Francisco. Nice manageable size, very diverse and open-minded. Plus, although it can be chilly with the fog, it is never as cold as Chicago, New York or Philadelphia in the winter. Or for that matter, as hot during the summer ;)
Chicago is great, and having lived there myself for awhile I can safely say to you, just visit. I like living near enough to go whenever I want, but not dealing with Lake Michigan, the winds, the snow, the traffic, the crime, the dirt, and the cost of living.
However its an amazing place to spend a spring day walking around the Loop, they have wonderful museums and concerts and art and events and if I didnt have kids, I might live there myself again. In boys town. Two snaps up for the gay boys of Chicago, they know how to party.
From your title, I was wondering if Rob had overindulged on the bean salad again.
I loved Chicago, too, while I was there. Perhaps Chicago is a cheaper alternative to NYC for you then?
Great! shot. (Hi!)
