what friends are for

UPDATED to include photos!

Yesterday afternoon I found myself standing outside a theatre, in a small but eager crowd of people, waiting for Scott Bakula to emerge.

You see, Doreen loves her some Scott Bakula. No really, you have no idea. Quantum Leap is her Full House. Sam Beckett is her Uncle Jesse. And it just so happens that Scott Bakula has been starring in a musical not so terribly far away from here, and it just so happens that in an interesting turn of events that can only be described as having been guided by Fate Itself, a group of us (Rob/me, Doreen/Tony, JLD/HFD) met and attended said musical on Sunday. You know, for the sole purpose of seeing Scott Bakula. Well, that was Doreen's motivation anyway. The rest of us weren't sure why we went, considering none of us really feels one way or another about Scott Bakula (or, in Rob's case, has ever even heard of him). I suspect the reason we were there had something to do with the fact that we freaking love Doreen. (And, um, perhaps that we had nothing better to do.)

At any rate, we went. And afterwards we stood outside the building, by the exit door, waiting for him. The boys hung back, tolerant but clearly bored, while us girls plotted ways to distract the crowd when he emerged so that Doreen could have a clear path to him. And then suddenly people were clapping and there was Scott Bakula!! Doreen moved in, Playbill and pen in hand. About the same time, Rob came up to me and whispered, "We've been watching the other cast members and they're all heading over to that restaurant across the street. We need to tell Doreen that Scott Bakula is going to be eating dinner over there!" I nodded, smiling at the fact that Rob was assisting with the stalking. Then I looked around for Tony and JLD and spotted them easing into the crowd, stationing themselves strategically in spots with the best view, camera phones raised and ready. (Photos below courtesy of JLD.)

And then Doreen was walking up to Scott Bakula! HFD and I each held our breath. And then Doreen was talking to him! and he was signing! and Tony and JLD were taking photos! (and I'll totally post one once I get them!) and I was hopping up and down blabbering, "I'm so excited! I'm so excited! She's with Scott Bakula!! I'm so excited!"

(Click on photo to see larger.)

SCOTT BAKULA!! (The Howard Stern hair was for the role.)

That's Doreen on the left, waiting to meet SCOTT BAKULA!

Doreen and SCOTT BAKULA! See how they're totally leaning into each other?

And then the encounter was over. Tony and JLD retreated from the crowd and Doreen sauntered over to us with a surreal smile on her face. "Ohmygod!! You met Scott Bakula!" I exclaimed. She showed us the Playbill, signed by Scott Bakula and addressed to her, DOREEN!

"What did you say?" I asked, breathless.

"I told him I was a big fan," she gushed.

"I'm sure he's never heard that before," I teased.

"And then after he signed it, I said, 'You're awesome.'"

"Profound."

"Yeah, well, while I was waiting, I practiced what I was going to say." I waited for her sarcastic smirk, but it never came. I think she was sincere.

But I didn't tease her further because the truth is, if it were me meeting John Stamos, I'd do well to form a complete sentence. I definitely wouldn't have the presence of mind to come up with anything as compelling as "You're awesome." Probably I would lose the ability to move altogether. And if I did somehow find myself standing next to him, I would certainly forget why I was even there (namely, to get him to sign my boob).

But I also know that if I were meeting John Stamos, Rob and JLD would snap photos and Tony would have the other cast members under surveillance. And I know that if I were truly unable to move or speak, HFD would push me toward John Stamos and Doreen would say, on my behalf, "This is Kelly. Please sign her boob. And by the way, you're awesome."

And that's the thing. While meeting Scott Bakula or John Stamos (or perhaps even George Clooney) is certainly a mind-blowing moment, it's the people we get to call friends who really rock our world.

(Y'all know the John Stamos rule on this blog? The one that prohibits any mocking (or over-the-top adoring because STEP OFF ALREADY, bitch) of John Stamos? The one which Nilbo takes it upon himself to break on a regular basis? Yes, well, that rule also applies to Scott Bakula. Don't be dissin' or kissin' my girl's Quantum Leap lovah.)

RzDrms  |  1 May 2006 - 5:19pm

i think i'm much more concerned with the fact that there's no new tagline already. "keep 'lines on going!" (yeah, i know that one sucks, but i'm desperate!) or "keep ladies off guys!" something! anything! "kelly's loving obsession grows!"

and p.s. sorry 'bout that one time i dreamt about john stamos. it meant nothing. he really wanted to be in your dream. am i still a bitch now?

kelly  |  1 May 2006 - 5:30pm

Shit, I totally forgot about the tagline! How is that possible?!! I mean, we got home pretty late last night and I was super excited about The Scott Bakula Sighting and all, but STILL! How does one just up and forget a tagline?!! I'll get right on it.

And Rz, hon, you were never the bitch. There were a few young 'uns (like, middle school, I think!) who came around here all We Loooooove John Stamos. But that was never you. And besides, I'm totally over the dream. Completely. Okay, mostly. ;)

mrtl  |  1 May 2006 - 6:01pm

yay for doreen!

RzDrms  |  1 May 2006 - 6:22pm

methinks i may need a cigarette after reading that new tagline! whew!

nicole  |  1 May 2006 - 7:07pm

God, I love Doreen. Doreen, if you're reading this, hon, God, I love you. :)

nicole  |  1 May 2006 - 7:09pm

p.s.- by the way, rob, i don't know who that scott guy is either, (but this post makes him sound like a rock star!)

closet metro  |  1 May 2006 - 7:16pm

If you do meet The Stamos, and get him to sign your boob, will you be posting pictures of it? Cuz' if you would, Nilbo and I might try to scrape together The Stamos' appearance fee.

JLD  |  1 May 2006 - 8:11pm

After we parted ways for the night and HFD and I set out to find George Clooney, we were talking about how much easier it is to meet your favorite actor when they are on the B list (no offense Doreen). Even if it is easier, I bet the feeling of life-long accomplishment (no offense Tony) is no less dimished. Congrats Doreeen! Oh and we didn't find Dr. Ross :(

HFD  |  1 May 2006 - 9:18pm

I was just reading my People magazine 50 Most Beautiful People issue. Such a travesty that neither Mr. Stamos nor Mr. Bakula was chosen for the prestigious award. However, in other breaking news, John Stamos attended the April 21st show of Three Days of Rain, starring the A lister-of-all-A-listers. Kelly, you really would have hyperventilated had you been in the same theater as both of them, or even in the same STATE. Ok, really probably right now just KNOWING that they were in the same place. And just think, you could have had John sign one boob, and Julia sign the other...

William  |  1 May 2006 - 9:20pm

That is so cool for Doreen. Scott Bakula. I spent many a Firday Night Watching Quantum leap when I was in my late teens early twenties (Shut up. Yes Friday nights. I had no friends or girlfriends.)

ieatcrayonz  |  1 May 2006 - 9:41pm

Dammit! Why didn't I think to ask Garth to sign my boob? DAMMIT!

I loved Scott Bakula in Quantum Leap. Now that was a good show.

LadyBug  |  1 May 2006 - 9:59pm

You're awesome.

That is all.

.

.

No, wait. That's not all. I love Scott Bakula! (But totally NOT in a way that would in any way infringe upon the way Doreen loves him.) Scott Bakula in Quantum Leap and Richard Dean Anderson in MacGyver. Love 'em both. Hey, Doreen? Remember that one Quantum Leap when Sam was PREGNANT? And he leaped just before the birth, and...

Oh, God. I'm a total dork, aren't I?

I should've stopped after You're awesome.

kelly  |  1 May 2006 - 10:55pm

Closet Metro, I totally would. No really. Because if Stud Stamos signed my boob? Dude, I would want the WORLD to see that!

And HFD NUH-FREAKIN-UH!! OH MY GOD I AM FREAKING OUT! (THUS THE ALL-CAPS!!!) JULIA ROBERTS AND JOHN STAMOS? IN THE SAME ROOM?! (I wonder why he went to see her? Do you think they're friends? Or maybe he just thinks she's totally hot? Or, you know, respects her talent as an actor?) I CANNOT BELIEVE I MISSED THIS!!!!!

Von Krankipantzen  |  1 May 2006 - 11:54pm

That is sooooo exciting. How excellent for your friend. I hope you'll get the same experience one day with JS.

kerri  |  2 May 2006 - 1:37am

...in good times, and Bakula times. ; )

Ok, and I am herein admitting that I totally used to have a crush on Scott Bakula in his Quantum Leap days. And when I "met" Josh Hartnett I almost choked on my wine first. Because I'm classy like that.

Ern  |  2 May 2006 - 1:56am

Mmmmm, Doreen's right. Scott Bakula IS hot! And I want to know what fountain of youth he drinks from, because he STILL looks the same. Like in that Star Trek show that got cancelled. (Not that I would know anything about that, although this is where I should admit that in junior high school Brent Spiner MAY have been one of my TV crushes.) OK, maybe he looks like 5 years older, but Quantum Leap was at least, what, 15 years ago?

John Stamos  |  2 May 2006 - 6:02am

I was in the theatre for Julia Robert's new film launch. My agent managed to get me in ahead of Scott Bakula, the kid who played Theo in the Cosby Show, and Chachi from Happy Days. Score! And people were really nice when I was tearing their tickets, all "Hey, didn't you used to be somebody?" And I'd tell them and they'd be all "Great, great - so, where do we hang up our coats?"

Bastards.

Tell your friends I have a sliding scale for boob signings. Extra large is the most expensive. Yours? Umm. yeah, OK, we'll just go with an appearance fee, how's that?

Doreen  |  2 May 2006 - 9:25am

Gosh, I don't know where to start. First, let me say, that YES, friends and especially you all on Sunday evening were the bestest a girl could have. The support was amazing and I'll never forget it! The way I walked away from getting the autograph (and the utterance of my most profound words) and had not only my friends congratulate me, but perfect strangers (great show) too--"way to go, good job!" I didn't know these people, yet, they were showing their support as well. There was such solidarity and I think it comes from the love of a B-actor. Because, we all know the struggle they've had, yet we've loved them through it all. At that moment...a definite sense of community. I'm getting choked up.

Ok, so it was absolutely amazing to meet him! His hair was much longer than his Quantum Leap days since he needed long hair for the musical, but he still looked fabulous! And during the musical, his voice--pure genius. Loved it. Because you all know that during the QL episodes where he sang that that was his real voice: Rock Star, Lounge Singer, Man of La Mancha, Leap Home, Elvis episode. And yes, Ladybug, I remember the pregnant one. That was a good one! I sorta have all of the episodes memorized and own, I think, 3 seasons on DVD. I'm weird. But it was such a good show and it looks like they're coming out with either a new QL series or perhaps just a Anniversary episode. Totally psyched for that. Check it out on IMDB.

It was just uber cool to meet the guy I've sorta obsessed over for YEARS. And, Kelly, if there is EVER EVER EVER a chance to meet John Stamos, OMG, by railway, trailway or airplane, we are getting there.

dude! ladybug! i was totally just about to type *coughnilbo'sjustjealouscough* hahaha! great mind's think alike. :)

Amanda B.  |  2 May 2006 - 9:59am

Dude, Scott Bakula is like practically Richard Dean Anderson! Scott would whiz his pants if he met the RDA and possibly leave me to follow him about the countryside.

kelly  |  2 May 2006 - 3:42pm

Just want to clarify that the second "Scott" in Amanda B's comment is referring to her very own husband, Mr. B, and not Scott Bakula (although how totally weird is it that Scott Bakula is also a Scott B?!). And yeah, RDA is so to die for.

Also, Nilbo, you should consider it a great accomplishment in life to cause me to laugh at the expense of John Stamos. (And as for boobs, what I'd most like is to see John Stamos sign Julia's boob. Now that would be hot.)

anna  |  3 May 2006 - 9:10pm

OMG- i totally love scot backula. love him! except for his sci-fi crap, cause that stuff is crap.

Amy  |  8 May 2006 - 10:50am

So. Cool. Scott Bakula Rockulas!

Amy  |  8 May 2006 - 10:51am

I made my friends mother drive me up to a Toys R Us when I was fifteen because David Hasselhof was going to be there. But there were so many millions of people that all he did was wave to us from the ROOF. What a disappointment.
