swimming with dolphins

kelly  |  22 March 2006 - 2:45pm

For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be a mermaid. Visiting an aquarium makes me absolutely giddy. Rob could take them or leave them, so whenever we go I'm rushing ahead, pulling on his arm like a little girl tugging her father along. "Rob! Let's go see the clown fish! Oooh, look! Over there we can touch sting rays! Come on, hurry!" The best part are the huge tanks of fish; if I stand close enough I can almost pretend I'm living on the bottom of the sea. I think Ariel was so fucking stupid to trade her voice for legs. Why the hell would you want to walk on the earth when you could LIVE IN THE OCEAN? No boy, not even Prince Eric, is cute enough to give that up for.

One of the shore excursions offered on our honeymoon cruise was a swim with dolphins. I really wanted to do this. Really, really badly. Like, really. But somehow, Rob talked me into a plantation tour instead. A PLANTATION TOUR. I have no idea why I went along with this - the only explanation I can offer is that, just one week into our marriage, I must have still been in the Nice Wife stage and so thought the right thing to do was let Rob have what he wanted. (Or maybe the dolphin swim was full or something, because even in the Nice Wife stage I was a total PITA bitch.) Anyway, the plantation tour turned out to be as boring as it sounds. Except for when the guy shimmied up a palm tree, barefoot. That was pretty cool. But the rest of it? Hella lame. The whole time I was thinking about the dolphins. I totally should have been wearing a bumper sticker across my ass that said I'd rather be swimming with dolphins.

Ever since then (and beginning midway through the plantation tour, as I recall), I have made it clear to Rob that the next time we are on a cruise, WE ARE SWIMMING WITH DOLPHINS. None of this plantation tour shit. He can go pick guavas and drink coconut milk if he wants, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna miss the chance to commune with highly intelligent and utterly exquisite creatures. (And surely he must understand this because isn't the reason he married me so he could commune with a highly intelligent and utterly exquisite creature? Duh.)

So yeah, on this trip we are so swimming with dolphins! I've already booked the shore excursion. We are IN. Provided the universe doesn't fuck something up, of course.

We're leaving this evening. I'm not taking klog with me because Rob and I have made a no-computer rule for this vacation. It's just a short little trip - I'll be back early next week, unless I can find a sea witch who will turn me into a mermaid.

I shall miss you immensely, and am anxiously awaiting your return.

Say hi to Flipper for me!

::twitch, twitch::

So what you're saying is that watching the movie "Finding Nemo" is a total turn on for you?

Okay, I want to swim with the dolphins one day, too.

You know I've never even seen a dolphin, and I've been out to the Great Barrier Reef like five times. Not fair. I would love to swim with them. I hope you guys have a fantastic trip!

For the record, if you were wearing a bumper sticker that said "I'd rather be swimming with dolphins" across your ass, the font would have to be like what, eight point? I, on the other hand, could proudly display 4 inch letters.

Just another reason you'll look hot in your bikini. And another reason why all those people said they couldn't wait to see the pics. Not me. All those other people. Although I would look. You know, just to be polite.

dangit, i'm already having withdrawals! i could threaten you and say that i'll take over your place as your yoga girlfriend's favorite student if you don't hurry up and come back to us. but i'm scared of your sexy long legs karate-chopping my head off without getting a drop of blood on those smokin' green pants. ;)

I wouldnt turn down swimming with the dolphins, but if I had to choose between dolphin swimming and plantation tour- i'd so be all over the plantation tour. I LOVE THEM. I could go on a vacation that was simply plantation tours.

I'd be like you at the aquarium, except at a plantation. All the hand made woodwork, what it took to build them, how long they last- it leaves me in aw.

Ya. I'm a dork like that.

Cooooooool! Have the best time. And I want to see pics of you flirting with the dolphins!

anna  |  22 March 2006 - 10:21pm

have fun stormin' the castle, er, i mean swimming with dolphins.

Momo  |  22 March 2006 - 10:49pm

First of all, let me say that I will miss you and I hope ya'll have a great time.

Second, I'm sooooooo jealous. I'd love to swim with the dolphins. I can't wait to hear all about it and pictures would be awesome.

Finally, I knew we were seperated at birth! I too have always wanted to be a mermaid. As a child every time we went to the beach or pool, and living in Florida...we lived in the water, I would pretend to be a mermaid. I'd swim around holding my legs together as if they were a tail. Over the years,I would spend hours splashing around perfecting this fine art. (I wonder if I'd still be any good at it.) I remember having to be pulled, kicking and screaming from the water. I've always loved the beach, and I'm soooo excited to be moving back to Florida.

jana  |  23 March 2006 - 10:58am

Yeah, I'm right there with you on the mermaid thing. Since I have children I have the 'excuse' to go see that mermaid movie that is out and I will totally pretend they want to see it more than I do.

Have fun, I am very jealous!

I love aquariums too. I've never gotten to swim with dolphins and I was rather skeptical of the whole thing (too trained, too regimented) until a friend of mine got to do that recently and she said it was the best part of her whole trip.

So, may you have an excellent experience and may you have _many_ wonderful parts of your trip.

enjoy!

Amy  |  23 March 2006 - 1:30pm

Have fun! Swim with those beautiful fishies! Take pictures! Don't become a mermaid for too long! Au Revoir!!

ieatcrayonz  |  23 March 2006 - 2:54pm

Just wanted to say that I just got completely giddy when I realized all of the fantastic Juxtapose shots we'll get to see when you get back!

And I almost had a heart attack when I saw a news story this morning about somebody dying on a cruise ship. My heart started beating again when I saw it wasn't in Puerto Rico.

Amanda B.  |  24 March 2006 - 1:44pm

I always wished there were real unicorns. I still do sometimes. :D

Have fun and be careful!

The Kept Woman  |  27 March 2006 - 9:47pm

I always wanted to be Ariel when I grew up.

Of course I was in high school when the movie came out so that didn't go over so well with the folks who were about to dole out tuition for university.

LadyBug  |  28 March 2006 - 9:35am

I miss you.

That is all.
