spf: 80's theme

Something from the 80's I can't let go of

I still have lots of things from the 80's in my parents' attic: My Little Ponies, Cabbage Patch Kids, Barbies galore. But I was too lazy to dig them out and take pictures, so I'm cheating a little here and using my brother. My brother was born in the mid-80's, the year I was in kindergarten. Today we are very close, but growing up we rarely got along as well as it appears in this photo.

A picture of me from the 80's

Things to note in this photo, which was taken at my super-cool birthday party held at the roller skating rink:

The stonewashed jeans.
How I've quite carefully crimped my hair.
The bangs that begin at the back of my head.
That I have lots of friends, as is apparent by the friendship bracelets stacked on my wrist.

What you can't see is the slap bracelet I have on the other arm. And the plastic thingamajig through which I have threaded the corner of my shirt. (Remember those...circular with a bar in the middle to cinch the shirt tight?) And the pink socks that perfectly match my pink shirt. And, of course, my lavendar hi-tops.

A CD or movie I have from the 80's

This is all I could find. I was (and still am, to be quite honest) a big fan of The Little Mermaid. I was not such a big fan of Dirty Dancing or the soundtrack, but it was the cool thing to have. Actually, in the 80's I was listening to Dolly Parton (shut up shut up shut up) but I don't think I have any of her records or tapes anymore.

I bet you could make a suh-weet coat of many colors out of those totally rad jeans and bitchin' pink shirt. Did we shop at the same pink shirt store?

Why is your teddy bear cake gray?

kelly  |  15 July 2005 - 1:39pm

(And to think that I hate pink now...I can't imagine why.) I think the cake was brown and pink, but it sure doesn't look it in the picture. A better question is, why do I have a teddy bear cake?

Unexpectedly, that birthday photo of you makes me cry. And think about your parents. I know what it's like to be blessed with a beautiful little girl with mischievous, intelligent eyes. You have been such a delight to them, I just know it.

I had one of those plastic shirt cinchers, too. Hell, I had one in every color. And I wore them with my big shirts and leggings (sh! don't tell Plum) and ohgoodlord it's all coming back to me now -- black suede ankle boots! I was in my 20s!

OK, NOW, you are just trying to freak me out! Is it just you and your brother in the fam? Because it is just me and MY brother, and HE was born in the mid 80's when I was in kindergarten. (Cue twilight zone music) Love the 80's wear, have a great weekend!

PS, Susie, you are SUCH a MOM! XO

Susie  |  15 July 2005 - 3:32pm

Ha! Thank you, Ern. ;)

Amy  |  15 July 2005 - 4:14pm

I think I would have been your friend back in the pink shirt picture,
most of the time. But I would have been really jealous of all those awesome things (crimped hair, acid wash, t-shirt thingy, bracelets) all on the same person at once. So I probably would have sat beside you and wished that you would take off a bracelet and give it to me.

What a sweet comment, Susie. Thank you.

He is my only sibling, Ern. Well, except for Ern, the longlost sister I just discovered. :)

I doubt I usually had it all going on, Amy. I was just dressed to the hilt because it was my birthday party. And you definitely would have gotten a bracelet.

YOU ARE SO YOUNG!

This explains your crush on Uncle Jessie and why my crush is of Luke Duke from Dukes of Hazard!

kelly  |  15 July 2005 - 8:05pm

Actually, I had a crush on Luke Duke, too, kristine. I loved that show - had (okay fine, still have - in the parents' attic with everything else) the tshirt and a plastic General Lee with figurines.

Honey, I am totally with you on the Dolly Parton thing.

I was country when country wasn't cool.

(And no, that's not Dolly Parton, it's Barbara Mandrell, but I WAS. And the fact that I know who sang that song pretty much proves it.)

Bente  |  16 July 2005 - 5:15am

Aww, you and your brother are so cute! I also love the Little Mermaid. I don't have the movie, but I have the soundtrack and play it for Elli all the time!

Nilbo  |  16 July 2005 - 8:15am

Ahh geez ... you're just a baby. I hate being reminded of that.

song  |  16 July 2005 - 11:05am

I am now scared to admit that I was born in the 80s. 84 to be precise, so I came THIS close to missing out on the pink w/ polka dots and the crimped hair. I have a photo of me in 1989 with a satin plae blue dress with puffy sleeves and crimped hair in a side-of-head-high pony tail. I so totally win the dork stakes :) But, I still love the little mermaid too.

kelly  |  16 July 2005 - 12:12pm

Yay for Dolly Parton, LB. And Barbara Mandrell. And Tanya Tucker. And Tammy Wynette. And...well, you get the idea.

We are pretty cute, aren't we Bente? My brother was an adorable little kid.

Nilbo - I'm not a baby. I'm a big girl. ::pouting::

Oh yes, it is all about the side ponytail, song!

ieatcrayonz  |  16 July 2005 - 10:43pm

Okay Missy! You have 20 minutes left to defend your July perfect attendence award. C'mon, you've already made it through have the month, you're almost there!

RazDreams  |  17 July 2005 - 1:31am

you and your brother are just so CUTE in that photo! and i'm loving the birthday pic. i was about 10-15 years old in mid-80s. duran duran posters were all.over. my bedroom wall. in the early 80s, i wore a dukes of hazzard trucker-type baseball hat ALL OF THE TIME. like, all the time. i loved that show, first bo, then luke. thanks for the reminders. :) (and i missed your post today too!)

mrtl  |  17 July 2005 - 5:32pm

Should I be cleaning here? You disappear for two days. Are you going to show up on my doorstep?

kelly  |  17 July 2005 - 6:58pm

I know, Ro, I suck. There is nothing I can say to defend my actions (er, inactions, rather). And I was so looking forward to my July badge! :(

We are super-cute, aren't we Raz? And I can say that because it was like, a decade ago. The cutest thing about my brother, when he was little, was his feet. Oooh, they were so little and cute! Now, not so much.

That is always a possibility, mrtl. I'm keeping you on your toes..
