beautiful soul

kelly  |  8 June 2005 - 10:04am

This week is quickly becoming all about featuring my friends. I'm okay with that because I have amazing friends.

You already know my best friend Doreen. She maintains a presence here at klog, and I've written about her here and here. Today is our due date. We both were due to be born the same day, same year, same town. It's unfortunate neither of us stuck to that (she was early, I was late) because then we could say that we've known each other since birth.

Anyway, I figure today is an appropriate day to blog about the partnership that is Doreen & Kelly. Or, as we sometimes said growing up, Dorelly. That's right, WAY before there was Bennifer there was Dorelly.

Many of the best memories of my life include Doreen. Here are just a few of the ones that come to mind today.

We have a thing we say to each other: LYME. It stands for something meaningful to us. We're a bit like an old married couple, I suppose. Not surprising, considering our friendship is the longest relationship either of us will ever have. We've been best friends since 2nd grade.

We talk fast. Individually and especially together. In elementary school we went to speech therapy together and had to talk with a met-ro-nome. It didn't help much. There are times when no one else can follow our conversations. That can be a good thing.

We wrote a mystery novel together in third grade. We worked on it every afternoon during the bus ride home. It was really good. No, REALLY good. We're not sure what happened to it, although there's a chance it's tucked away in my parents' attic. (Note to self: Find that!)

She totally looked like DJ Tanner growing up, and I thought that was so cool. Of course, since I was too young to be Rebecca, I wished I looked like DJ Tanner. The reason for this was, of course, JOHN STAMOS. (You said it right along with me, didn't you?)

We have traveled to France, Spain, and Mexico together. (While we were in Madrid, she threw a little surprise party for my 16th birthday.) Italy is next.

We have a history of choreographing silly dances to songs. "Boot Scootin' Boogie" and "Calendar Girl" come to mind, although there were others I've forgotten.

The idiot I dated in 8th grade Doreen had dated in 6th grade. She dumped him because he was making fart sounds with his armpits. I should have trusted her judgment then. I definitely do now.

The closest I came to ruining our friendship was due to jealousy over what I perceived to be her flirtation with Rob back in high school. Fortunately, we spent part of an evening sitting on the curb at Hardee's talking it out. Nowadays one of the things I appreciate most about each of them is the bond they have with each other. Sometimes I just sit back and watch them talk and think, "Damn, I am the luckiest person alive."

Doreen has been by my side for it all - 4th grade cheerleading, summer camp, swimming lessons, illicit movie dates, falling in love, four years of college, and the day I married Rob. And, fate willing, the Dorelly legacy will still be going strong when we're 90.

Happy due date, Doreen. I cannot imagine my life without you in it.

That was beautiful, Kelly, just beautiful.

Happy due date to you both. What an amazing friendship.

ieatcrayonz  |  8 June 2005 - 11:30am

When I first saw due date, I perked up and thought, "Okay which one of yoose is preggers?" I think I just want somebody to get pregnant. I'll stop now.

Dorelly, you don't (or maybe you do) know how truly wonderful you have it to have a lifelong best friend. It's such a rarity anymore...that and looking like DJ Tanner. Too funny. Awesome pictures. Y'all be the hottest 90 year old grannies on the block.

Spurious Plum  |  8 June 2005 - 12:06pm

Old friends rock. Happy baby wishes for Doreen, and congrats on your awesome friendship!

P.S. Everytime I see her name I think of that Treat Her Right song "Doreen". Do-do-do-do, la-la-la, la. Doooorreeenn...

kelly  |  8 June 2005 - 12:31pm

Oh dear, I think I just started another blogosphere pregnancy rumor!!

Heh.

But just to clarify, Doreen isn't pregnant any more than I'm pregnant. And I am SO not pregnant. Now Robyn on the other hand...who knows with her. ;)

Doreen  |  8 June 2005 - 12:57pm

Thank you for that.

(check your email)

LYME!

by the way, to Kelly's blogging friends--isn't she just absolutely wonderful! We've been best friends since 2nd grade, yes, with ups and downs (but what meaningful relationship doesn't have those), and our friendship will only get better with time. We're like a good wine, really, but not Merlot...

Doreen  |  8 June 2005 - 1:07pm

Oh dear...

Look at that bangs action in that first picture.

Crack me up.

mrtl  |  8 June 2005 - 3:01pm

This -- the story, the pictures, all of it -- is too friggin cute. You're so lucky to have eachother.

Do tell, Kelly... are you scheming on Doreen's fiance, too?

greenie  |  8 June 2005 - 3:54pm

I'm so jealous! It must be a girl thing; this lifelong alliance that allows you to stay close like that. I've never had a friendship of that level, ever. But I know too, that has a lot to say about me and the way that I have kept relationships at arms length too. I've since made friendships that I know, I hope, will last the rest of our lives.

Does this make Doreen a kitten by proxy?

kelly  |  8 June 2005 - 4:34pm

Doreen, our bangs were the first thing I noticed about that photograph. What were we (our mothers?) thinking?!

mrtl, you tryin' to say I'm a slut or something? Perhaps you should say it again since I don't think everyone noticed the first 3 times. ;)

Kitten by proxy! I love that, greenie! You and Doreen would hit it off immediately. You are both very compassionate, gentle-natured people who like to paint walls with bold colors. :)

Doreen  |  8 June 2005 - 4:46pm

Greenie--you like to paint boldly as well?! wahoo! You'll also be happy to know that I bought a house in September and was able to plant for the first time this spring. Snapdragons and New Guinea Impatiens. It's exciting watching them grow--a very motherly feeling, indeed!

Also--I would be honored to be a kitten! Me-ow!

Jessicarabbit  |  8 June 2005 - 4:53pm

That is so sweet. I dont think I have even known anyone for that length of time in my life. Your very lucky to have such a close friend like that.

I cant even come up with something smutty to say.

I hope your happy, you have de-smutted me.

Stamos.

kelly  |  8 June 2005 - 5:21pm

Shit, I'm responsible for de-smutting Jessica? I'm going to have a heap of pissed off people knocking on my door.

Smut. Stamos. Oooh, smutty Stamos.

mrtl  |  8 June 2005 - 6:07pm

You know you'll be happy when you're #1 for "John Stamos' slut."

So when's your birthday anyway? (and please don't say you've posted that and I missed it, because then I would feel bad for real)

kelly  |  8 June 2005 - 10:45pm

Oh you know I'll be ecstatic to be John Stamos' slut. ;)

June 23 - I was 15 days late. My poor mom.

Bente  |  8 June 2005 - 11:32pm

Life long friends are great! I've got one who I've been best friends with since birth. Well she was May 22 and I was April 22, but we lived right next door to each other. I know it's a friendship that will last forever.

Torrie  |  8 June 2005 - 11:45pm

I'm trying to email you something! Where the hell is your email?

kelly  |  8 June 2005 - 11:49pm

Torrie, it's hidden deep within the taglines page. I need to change that.

kalkik at verizon dot net

Bente, living next to your best friend would be a blast! I bet you've got tons of great stories.

Bente  |  9 June 2005 - 1:21am

I lived next door to her till I was 15, so there are a few stories. Maybe I'll use some for blog material one day.

cat  |  9 June 2005 - 7:31am

Oh, I LOVE this. I LOVE THIS! You two are such CUTE friends, and I am totally jealous! And you know what? That stair railing in the second picture TOTALLY looks like the Tanner staircase. But on the wrong side. But still! It DOES! I am totally holding my breath, waiting for Uncle Jessie to run down the stairs from his attic hideaway which he shares with stupid Becky and the twins, his mullet all windswept and sexy from jamming out with the Beach Boys...

Anywhos, I cannot WAIT to get some of my stuff from AZ out of storage so I can scan and post old pictures, too. I am inspired.

Seriously. You are blessed with an awesome friend, there, Kell.

rob  |  9 June 2005 - 9:52pm

Cute haircuts, but where are the highlights?

Weetzie  |  9 June 2005 - 11:28pm

Best Friends like you guys are the BESTEST!
